Hello Doctor, why do some people get sick during periods? My friend even gets admitted to the hospital and is put on drip. She vomits and is sickly. What causes it, yet some people go throught it pain-free. Prossy.
Dear Prossy
In adolescents, the most common menstrual abnormality, affecting up to 80-90 per cent in some populations, is painful periods (Dysmenorrhea). This is followed by heavy menstrual bleeding (menorrhagia), which often causes significant reductions in quality of life and iron deficiency whose prevalence ranges from 8 to 27 per cent in various populations according to studies.
In adult women, painful periods is the most common menstrual complaint, with studies in various adult populations reporting it around 73 to 82 per cent.
Although rarely life threatening, menstrual disorders can cause major social, psychological and occupational upset.
Heavy or prolonged bleeding (menorrhagia), irregular or infrequent periods(oligomenorrhea), and painful menstruation (dysmenorrhea) all these issues are often linked to hormonal imbalances, structural problems in the uterus, or underlying conditions like Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) and almost always have to first be ruled out or diagnosed and treated before relief.
She is advised to visit a gynecologist for assessment.
