The Catholic community worldwide celebrated the 60TH anniversary since the Canonization of the Uganda Martyrs, praising their bravery and devotion to God.
The celebrations took place in Vatican, Rome on October 20, with Ugandan catholic bishops and political leaders in attendance.
Cardinal Peter K.A Turkson, Chancellor of the Pontifical Academy for Sciences and Special Envoy of Pope Francis led the celebrations alongside Archbishop of Kampala, Most Rev Paul Ssemogerere; Archbishop of Mbarara Archdioecese, Most Rev Lambert Bainomugisha.
During his teaching, Cardinal Turkson urged Africans to draw inspiration from the Uganda Martyrs and build a brighter future founded on faith, integrity and transparency.
“The Uganda Martyrs teach us valuable lessons: faith, integrity, transparency, and governance, their witness inspires us to create a better future for our land and people” said Cardinal Turkson further noting that Charles Lwanga and his companions were young adults who carried with them Gospel values. He challenged the youth to re-engage with faith.
Represented by Deputy Speaker of Parliament Hon Thomas Tayebwa, President Museveni’s speech recognised Christianity’s significant contribution to Uganda’s development by introducing scientific knowledge, education, and social values. He further commended Christian preachers for sharing European scientific knowledge to reduce disease burdens.
Hon Tayebwa extended gratitude to the Church leaders in Uganda and the Vatican for their tireless efforts in organising the occasion and their dedication to preserving the legacy of the Uganda Martyrs.
Top Ugandan officials Hon Justine Kasule Lumumba, State Minister for Finance -Henry Musasizi, Mebers of Parliament Joseph SSewungu, Sarah Opendi and Herbert Ariko were also in attendance
