Musimenta’s tale of grit and God’s grace

By Nicholas Akasula

Musimenta Bruce defines himself as a “believer in the transformative power of resilience and faith.”

Born into loss, having lost his father at just six months, Musimenta’s life began as a story of absence. His mother, Roy, raised him and his siblings amid adversity, tirelessly trying her hand at small-scale agriculture.

“She juggled farm work, a small retail stall, and casual labour to put food on the table,” Musimenta recalls.

Thankfully, he adds, the family had unwavering support from his extended paternal relatives, particularly the late Prof. Emmanuel Tumusiime Mutebile, former Governor of the Bank of Uganda, and Maj. Gen. Timothy Sabiiti Mutebile. “They provided financial support, mentorship, and access to education that would otherwise have been out of reach. They helped pay part of my school fees, encouraged my leadership potential, and reminded me that hardship is not the end, but the beginning of growth,” he says.

Humble beginnings

Musimenta grew up in a small village in Kabale district, surrounded by breathtaking hills and a close-knit community. His early childhood was marked by long walks to school barefoot, scarce food during planting seasons, and school fees that were hard to raise.

“I have memories of watching my mother struggle to provide for us, as well as unforgettable gestures of love and care, neighbours sharing cassava or beans when we had none,” he says.

With the support of his uncles, he accessed quality education at Ntare School, Namiryango Secondary School, and later Makerere University ,  a rare privilege in his village. His dedication earned him awards such as best debater, top student, and leadership medals, which motivated him to stay the course.

Extraordinary experiences

A pivotal moment came in Senior Six at Namiryango.

“A prophetic woman of God visited our school and singled me out, declaring: ‘Young man, the Lord has set you apart. You carry gifts of leadership, wisdom, and intercession. Nations shall gather to hear your voice, and you will be a vessel for peace and transformation.’ This pierced my heart and awakened a conviction that I was living for a greater purpose,” he recalls.

Another life-defining moment was a near-death experience, which he credits to God’s miraculous protection.

Today, the boy who once roamed village hills now speaks before leaders and travels internationally. “God has blessed me with opportunities to visit Dubai, Kenya, Zambia, and the Democratic Republic of Congo,” he notes.

Faith at the centre

Faith has been his cornerstone. “I am a committed Christian, and my journey has been anchored in prayer, scripture, and fellowship. Whenever I faced academic pressures or leadership responsibilities, I leaned on God for wisdom. Faith has taught me to value community, humility, and service as pillars of fulfilling God’s plan,” Musimenta affirms.

His servant heart is evident in his work as a youth leader, both in church and at university, where he mobilised young people into community service. This commitment led to the founding of his organisation in 2021.

Achievements and impact

Musimenta is now the Director and Founder of the Pamoja Peace and Love Foundation. Inspired by his experiences of loss, resilience, and the example of his late uncle Prof. Mutebile, the foundation engages in community development, environmental protection, health, and youth empowerment, partnering with organisations such as MoDVA/UPDF, Centenary Bank, NIRA, and regional friends in Tanzania, DRC, and Ghana.

“I champion peacebuilding, environmental conservation, and youth development,” he says. He has also recently been appointed liaison officer for the Youth Futures Research Project under Mastercard Foundation, AFIDEP, and CAP YEI.

Despite challenges, including jealousy and threats to his life, Musimenta remains grounded in faith. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Finance and is finalising a Master’s in Entrepreneurship. He has represented Uganda internationally, organised health campaigns, blood donation drives, and market clean-up events, and spearheaded youth skilling initiatives, including digital platforms like Worket, connecting skilled youth to job opportunities.

“I see a future where youth are empowered through education, entrepreneurship, and collaboration. I am determined to expand Pamoja’s reach across Africa, nurturing leaders who can drive peace and transformation,” he says.

His guiding scripture is Jeremiah 29:11, which reminds him that his journey is intertwined with the many lives God allows him to touch.

With a parting message, he affirms: “With faith, education, and community, I will continue to serve as a beacon of hope, spreading peace, love, and unity.”
