The 20th edition of the Association of Uganda University Sports (AUUS) Games came to a thrilling close on December 23 at Uganda Christian University (UCU) in Mukono. After five days of action-packed competition. Ndejje University emerged as the overall winners for the seventh time.
Over 30 universities took part in 19 sports, including football, basketball, volleyball, netball, swimming, athletics, rugby, table tennis, karate, woodball, chess, badminton, handball, and others.
Ndejje performed well in many sports, which contributed to their top spot. Their ladies’ table tennis team took gold after beating Kampala International University in the final. The mixed bridge team won gold by leading the round-robin stage. The men’s bridge team got silver after a close final against UCU. Ndejje also earned medals in athletics, karate, swimming, and woodball. These points from different events helped them stay at the top.
The victory represents Ndejje University’s seventh AUUS Games title, adding to earlier wins in 2011, 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, 2023, and now 2025. This remarkable record highlights the institution’s long-term dedication to sports development, strong mentorship, and a values-based approach to competition
UCU victory
Hosts Uganda Christian University finished second overall. They collected 18 medals in total. UCU won gold in men’s football after beating Makerere University 2-1 on penalties after a 0-0 draw. Goalkeeper Elton Mwidu saved two penalties to win the match.
“God is my beginning, God is my end, and God is my foundation. There is no one else I can credit for this victory,” Mwido said. He added that he uses such moments to share the message of faith with those around him, a practice he describes as sports evangelism. He went on to attribute his success entirely to God, choosing not to acknowledge any other contributions or strategies that may have played a role in the build-up to the game
UCU also took gold in men’s basketball and women’s basketball, including volleyball for both men and women, and netball to dominate popular team sports.
Other universities
Makerere University came third with 17 medals. They lost the men’s football final but won the swimming championship by scoring 1037 points in swimming. They beat Ndejje by 52 points. Makerere also took relay golds in women’s 200m medley and freestyle events.
Kampala University placed fourth with 11 medals. This included two golds. The result marked a strong return for them after years of lower positions. The next AUUS Games will happen at Mbarara University of Science and Technology in 2026 or later.
