On June 8, 2025, Portugal etched their name in history as the first nation to win the UEFA Nations League twice, defeating defending champions Spain 5-3 on penalties after a pulsating 2-2 draw in the final at Munich’s Allianz Arena. The victory marked Portugal’s third major international trophy, all achieved in the Cristiano Ronaldo era.

Portugal’s journey to the 2025 Nations League title was a testament to their depth and determination. The campaign began in September 2024 with a strong league phase, where they topped their group against Croatia, Scotland, and Poland. Key victory included a 5-1 thrashing of Poland.

In the quarter-finals, Portugal faced Denmark, requiring extra time in the second leg to secure a 5-3 aggregate victory, with Ronaldo scoring crucial goals. The semi-final saw Portugal overcome hosts Germany 2-1, with Ronaldo’s winner ending a 25-year drought of not beating the Germans.

The final against Spain, billed as a clash between Ronaldo and Spain’s teenage sensation Lamine Yamal, lived up to its hype. Spain struck first in the 21st minute through Martín Zubimendi, but Nuno Mendes equalized five minutes later with a rifled shot. Mikel Oyarzabal restored Spain’s lead before halftime, only for Ronaldo to level the score in the 61st minute with a clinical finish from a deflected Mendes cross.

Neither side could find a winner in extra time, leading to a tense penalty shootout. Goalkeeper Diogo Costa emerged as the hero, saving Álvaro Morata’s penalty, allowing Rúben Neves to slot home the decisive kick.

Factors why Portugal won.

Several factors contributed to Portugal’s triumph. Roberto Martínez’s tactical versatility, often employing a 4-3-3 with fluid attacking options, maximized the squad’s talent. His ability to switch between wide wingers like Rafael Leao and more central forwards like Pedro Neto kept opponents guessing.

The midfield, anchored by Vitinha and Bruno Fernandes, provided control and creativity, with Vitinha’s tempo-setting passing earning praise as the keystone of the team. Portugal’s discipline was remarkable, conceding only one penalty across 10 matches and avoiding red cards.

Ronaldo, at 40, remained the talisman, scoring three goals in the finals, including the equalizer in the final, proving his enduring clutch ability. Nuno Mendes, named Player of the Tournament, was instrumental with his goal and assist in the final, his dynamic runs down the left flank proving unstoppable.

This victory came six years after Portugal’s inaugural Nations League win in 2019, when they defeated the Netherlands 1-0 on home soil. The 2025 triumph reclaimed the trophy from Spain, who had won the 2023 edition by defeating Croatia on penalties. Portugal’s success not only earned them €10.5 million approximately (50,848,770,000 UGX) in prize money but also boosted their FIFA world rankings and secured a 2026 World Cup qualification play-off spot.
For Portugal, this win reaffirmed their status as a European powerhouse, blending experienced players like Christiano Ronaldo with emerging talent like Rafael Laeo, Pedro Neto. As they set their sights on the 2026 World Cup, Martínez’s squad has sent a clear message to the football world.
