Ndejje University emerged as the overall champion of the 13th Eastern Africa University Games, held at Maseno University in Kenya, showcasing its dominance in sports within the region.
The Ugandan institution clinched a total of 98 medals, comprising 34 golds, 35 silvers, and 29 bronze, solidifying its position as a powerhouse in university sports. This victory marks the eighth time Ndejje University has won the prestigious overall trophy in the competition’s history.
The second position was claimed by the United States International University-Africa (USIU-A), which earned a commendable 49 medals. These included 17 golds, 9 silvers, and 23 bronzes. Meanwhile, Uganda Christian University (UCU) secured third place with an impressive haul of 32 medals, including 15 golds, 10 silvers, and 7 bronzes. This performance is considered one of UCU’s best in the history of the games.
The event, held under the theme “Harnessing Regional Integration Through Sports Excellence,” brought together 39 universities from across Eastern Africa. The games were officially opened on December 17, 2024, by the Vice Chancellor of Maseno University, Prof. Julius Omondi Nyabundi, during a vibrant ceremony that set the tone for a competitive and engaging tournament.
Speaking about the event, the Federation of East Africa University Sports Secretary General, Brian Miiro, highlighted the growth of participation in the games. Compared to the previous edition hosted by Ndejje University, which attracted 30 universities, this year saw an increase of nine institutions, bringing the total to 39. This rise in numbers reflects the growing interest and importance of sports as a tool for regional unity and integration.
The last edition, held in Uganda, faced challenges due to the Ebola outbreak, which limited the participation of universities. Despite this setback, the success of the 2024 games in Kenya indicates a positive trajectory for the competition, with the next edition scheduled to take place in Tanzania.
The Eastern Africa University Games have become a significant platform for fostering regional collaboration through sports. Ndejje University’s exceptional performance not only highlights its dominance in university sports but also sets a high standard for other institutions in the region.
In a show of consistency and competitive spirit, Ndejje University demonstrated exceptional performance when they hosted the Eastern Africa University Games in 2022. During the competition, they collected an impressive 129 medals, including 59 golds, reaffirming the university’s dominance in sporting activities both at home and abroad.
As the games concluded, participants and organisers alike celebrated the spirit of sportsmanship and the role of sports in bringing together diverse communities across Eastern Africa. The event reaffirmed the power of sports to inspire excellence and strengthen regional bonds.
