A fresh beginning

By Rev Eric Mbusa

Isaiah 43:18-19: “Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.”

The Book of Isaiah was written during a tumultuous period for the Israelites. They faced exile and disillusionment, reflecting on their failures and the consequences of their actions. In this context, God speaks through the prophet Isaiah, calling His people to relinquish their focus on the past and embrace the new possibilities before them.

“The hardest part of a journey is often deciding to take the first step,” said  writer Mark Twain, reminding us that understanding our past is crucial but not a destination. Grappling with our past can be challenging. While we can learn from our experiences, dwelling excessively on them can hinder our growth. From a philosophical perspective, Friedrich Nietzsche noted, “He who has a why to live for can bear almost any how.” Understanding our past is about finding meaning in our experiences while not letting them dictate our future.

Paul tells us Christians that we must acknowledge our history and the lessons it brings, but we must not allow it to paralyse us. Philippians 3:13-14 says: “Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead.”

God’s promise of renewal forms a cornerstone in Scripture. Whether in the Old Testament or the New, God’s unwavering love manifests in His desire to restore His people. This promise culminates in Jesus Christ, who embodies the new creation and offers fresh starts to all who believe. “The greatest glory in living lies not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall,” said Nelson Mandela, highlighting the essence of renewal. 2 Corinthians 5:17 says: “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!” This renewal is a call to shed the old and embrace the fullness of life offered to us through Christ.

To genuinely experience a fresh beginning, we must embrace change. While change can be daunting, it provides opportunities for growth and transformation.

a) Let go
Actively release what weighs you down, such as past grievances or guilt. Paul guides us in 1 Peter 5:7 (“Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you.”). This aligns with the great philosopher Buddha, who said, “If you want to fly, give up everything that weighs you down.”

b) Seek His guidance
Immerse yourself in prayer and study of God’s Word for wisdom during times of change. According to James 1:5 (“If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God…”), the value of such a beginning is immense. Let us remember that “The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step,” as noted by Lao Tzu.

c) Act in faith
Stepping into change requires courage and trust in God’s plan. Martin Luther King Jr. said, “Faith is taking the first step even when you don’t see the whole staircase.” It is also noted in Hebrews 11:1 (“Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.”).

Moving forward involves both personal and communal dimensions.

  • Personal Growth: Initiate new habits that deepen your relationship with God.
  • Community Engagement: Actively participate in your church community, encouraging one another in love. Paul guides us in Hebrews 10:24-25 (“And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds…”).
  • Service: Use your gifts to serve others, reflecting Christ’s love through action. Galatians 5:13 guides us: Serve one another humbly in love.

Appeal
I invite anyone who feels the need for a fresh beginning—whether it’s letting go of past burdens, embracing God’s promise, or stepping into change—to do it now. God is ready to do a new thing in you. “The secret of change is to focus all of your energy not on fighting the old, but on building the new,” said Socrates. Do not let your past define your future; today, take the first step toward renewal.

Conclusion prayer
Heavenly Father, we thank You for the promise of renewal and fresh beginnings. Help us to let go of the past and embrace the new opportunities You present. Fill us with faith and wisdom as we embark on this journey together in this New Year, 2026. Be blessed.
