The air at Anfield was electric on April 27, 2025, as Liverpool FC sealed their 20th top-flight title with a commanding 5-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur. The victory, a testament to Arne Slot’s tactical brilliance and the squad’s relentless struggle, marked Liverpool’s second Premier League title in 35 years.
Tottenham’s Dominic Solanke, a former Liverpool player, shocked the Anfield crowd by heading in a cross from James Maddison to give Spurs a 1-0 lead. But Luis Díaz brought Liverpool back into the game, tapping in a cross from Dominik Szoboszlai to level the score at 1-1.
Alexis Mac Allister, the midfield metronome, doubled Liverpool’s lead with a clinical finish, Cody Gakpo, towering in attack, netted in a third before halftime, sending the Anfield into early celebration.
Mo Salah, the Premier League’s top scorer with 28 goals, added another to his tally by scoring Liverpool’s fourth goal helping keep Liverpool at the top of the game. Liverpool’s fifth goal came when a cross from Trent Alexander-Arnold aimed at Salah was accidentally turned into the net by Spurs defender Destiny Udogie.
This will be Liverpool’s first Premier League trophy that they can celebrate in front of their fans, unlike their 2019/20 title win. It is a huge moment for Liverpool supporters, who were already showing signs of joy and celebration during the game against Tottenham.
With Liverpool’s win, forward Cody Gakpo expressed hope that Trent Alexander-Arnold will sign a new contract, following Mo Salah and Virgil van Dijk’s renewals, to help strengthen the team. However, Trent has stayed silent about his contract situation, amid reported talks with Real Madrid.
Slot era
Arne Slot, the Dutchman took over from Jurgen Klopp last summer, ending a remarkable era at Anfield and starting a new chapter for Liverpool. His high-pressing, possession-based system had transformed Liverpool into a juggernaut, blending Klopp’s heavy-metal football with a new layer of tactical sophistication.
Despite the big shoes he had to fill, the former Feyenoord boss has already matched Klopp by winning the Premier League title.
However, even though he now joins Liverpool legends like Kenny Dalglish, Bob Paisley, and Bill Shankly in lifting the trophy, the future might not be as bright. Recent history shows that the last four managers who won the league in their first season were all sacked within three years.
The first case of this strange pattern is Jose Mourinho, who secured the Premier League title in the 2004-05 season during his first year managing Chelsea and Roman Abramovich sacked him just a few weeks into the 2007-08 season.
This does not necessarily mean history will repeat itself, but Slot has a chance to prove himself by maintaining a high level of performance in the Premier League in the seasons ahead.
