With food prices rising toward the end of the year, many households are searching for creative ways to prepare a delicious Christmas meal without overspending. The good news? You can still enjoy a full, flavour packed festive spread with less than UGX 30,000. Here are five budget friendly Christmas recipes that bring together aroma, colour and comfort without breaking the bank.
1. Christmas Pilau – UGX 10,000–15,000
A classic Christmas favourite that does not require a lot of money.
Ingredients
- 2 cups rice
- 1 medium onion
- 2 tomatoes (optional)
- Pilau masala (UGX 1,000 sachet)
- 2 cloves garlic
- Half green pepper
- Small pack of beef cubes or broth
- Cooking oil
- Salt
Procedure
- Fry onions until golden brown.
- Add garlic, pepper and pilau masala.
- Add raw rice and stir to coat every grain.
- Pour in beef broth or water, add salt, simmer on low heat.
- Fluff and serve.
Add grated carrots or peas if you already have them at home.
2. Crispy Roast Chicken Bites – UGX 8,000–12,000
A cheaper alternative to a full chicken but just as festive.
Ingredients
- 3–4 chicken thighs or drumsticks
- Salt
- Black pepper or Royco
- Paprika (optional)
- Cooking oil
Procedure
- Cut the chicken into bite-size pieces.
- Season with salt, pepper and a little paprika.
- Pan-fry until crispy, or oven-roast if you have one.
- Finish with a squeeze of lemon if available.
Drumsticks cost less but still deliver great flavour.
3. Spiced Christmas Potatoes – UGX 5,000–7,000
Simple, filling, and perfect as a side dish.
Ingredients
- 1kg Irish potatoes
- Salt
- 1 onion
- Cooking oil
- Curry powder or paprika
Procedure
- Peel and boil potatoes until tender.
- Fry onions, then add curry powder.
- Add the boiled potatoes and pan-sear until golden.
- Sprinkle with salt and serve.
4. Holiday Vegetable Stir Fry – UGX 4,000–6,000
A colourful dish that adds freshness to the Christmas table.
Ingredients
- Cabbage
- Carrots
- Green pepper
- Onion
- Salt
- Cooking oil
Procedure
- Slice all vegetables thinly.
- Sauté onions, then add carrots and pepper.
- Add cabbage and stir fry quickly to keep it crunchy.
- Season lightly and serve.
Buying vegetables from local markets makes it even cheaper.
5. Christmas Punch (Non-Alcoholic) – UGX 3,000–5,000
A festive drink without the cost of sodas or wine.
Ingredients
- 1 ripe pineapple
- Fresh ginger
- Lemon (optional)
- Sugar
Procedure
- Boil pineapple peels and ginger for 20 minutes.
- Add sugar to taste.
- Chill and add lemon slices if available.
- Serve cold over ice.
