Scripture:
“The Bible says in Proverbs 4:13: “Hold on to instruction, do not let it go; guard it well, for it is your life.”
This month, we reflect on a theme that is both a gift and a responsibility: Your Education, Your Future.
Education is your right, granted by God and recognised by society, to help you build a better future. But while it is your right, it also comes with responsibilities. As a child, it is essential to understand this balance and to commit to your learning journey with diligence and gratitude.
Nelson Mandela once said: “Education is the most powerful weapon we can use to change the world.” Through education, you gain knowledge that can open doors to jobs, businesses, and life opportunities. Beyond academics, it equips you with essential life skills—like problem-solving and decision-making—that prepare you to navigate life’s challenges.
If you are privileged to attend school, embrace it as a blessing. Make every effort to make the most of this opportunity because not every child has the same privilege.
The challenge of missing out
Some children, sadly, cannot access education. The reasons are many: financial difficulties, parents who cannot or will not pay school fees, early marriages, or even child labour. These children miss out on the opportunities education offers and the brighter future it can secure.
Reflect on this: how different would life be for them if they had the chance to go to school? This should inspire you to take your education seriously and to value the sacrifices made by your parents or guardians to ensure you remain in school.
Facing struggles of school
Admittedly, going to school comes with its own challenges. Waking up early, walking long distances on dusty or muddy roads, or navigating tiny pathways on your own can be difficult. Perhaps the subjects are tough, or balancing chores and schoolwork feels overwhelming.
Yet, despite these struggles, remember this: your education is an investment in your future. Every lesson learned, every hour spent in class, and every challenge overcome brings you closer to a brighter tomorrow.
Your responsibilities as a student
As a student, you have responsibilities to yourself, your teachers, and your family. These responsibilities include:
Attending school on time: Being punctual demonstrates discipline and respect for your education.
Paying attention in class: Focus during lessons and avoid distractions or playing during lessons.
Seeking help when needed: If you don’t understand something, ask your teachers or classmates for guidance.
Completing homework promptly: Take assignments seriously and submit them on time.
Respecting teachers and classmates: Honour those who teach you and show kindness to your peers.
Helping others value education
When you notice friends or classmates who seem uninterested in their studies, take it as your responsibility to encourage them. Gently remind them about the importance of education for their future. A kind word or thoughtful advice from you might make a big difference in their outlook.
Your education is a gift from God and a stepping stone to a successful future. Embrace it with gratitude, work diligently, and always remember the words of Proverbs 4:13: “Hold on to instruction, do not let it go; guard it well, for it is your life.”
