EVENT: MENGO SENIOR SCHOOL 130TH ANNIVERSARY

WHERE: MENGO SS
THEME: EPHESIANS 2:10

Deeply rooted in its Christian heritage, Mengo Senior School celebrated 130 years of nurturing minds and shaping character on 18th July 2025. The day’s theme, drawn from Ephesians 2:10, was: “For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.”

The celebrations began with a thanksgiving service held on the school grounds, led by Archbishop Stephen Kaziimba Mugalu. Worship was led by the St John School Choir, followed by speeches and heartfelt performances from the school’s Music, Dance and Drama (MDD) team.

The First Lady and Minister of Education, Hon Janet Kataaha Museveni, was the chief guest. She laid the foundation stone for a nine-storey mega dining complex, the signature project of the anniversary celebrations.

The dining complex is expected to be completed soon and will have a seating capacity of up to 9,000 learners. It will also include a gym, a 1,000-seat computer laboratory, a modern kitchen and an auditorium.

In her address, the First Lady congratulated the school on its remarkable journey and commended its outstanding achievements and contributions to Uganda and humanity. She attributed the school’s success to its foundation on “the Rock—God.”

Mrs Museveni urged students to prioritise their studies and embrace values such as integrity, honesty, respect, hard work, and the fear of the Lord. She called for a fight against what she termed “Acquired Integrity Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS)”, advocating for honesty in all spheres of life. “This is the new battle now, and I stand here to recruit you. Let us fight corruption and defeat it just like we defeated HIV/AIDS,” she emphasised.

Former leaders of Mengo Senior School, educators, members of the founding body (the Church Missionary Society), the Government of Uganda, parents, and alumni were recognised for their various contributions. The current Head Teacher, Dr. Nantagya, acknowledged the significant growth the school has experienced over the years.
