By Lilian Ntege

Shredded beef is a flavourful and versatile dish made by slow-cooking beef until it’s wonderfully tender and easy to pull apart into thin, succulent strands. Whether used in wraps, stews, sandwiches, or served with rice, this dish is a comforting favourite that never disappoints.
Here’s a step-by-step guide to preparing beautifully shredded beef at home.

Ingredients

  • 1 ½ kg beef chuck roast
  • 1 large onion
  • 4 garlic cloves
  • 1 cup strong brewed dry coffee
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 2tbsp apple cider vinegar
  • 2tbsp brown sugar
  • 1tbsp tomato paste
  • 2tbsp olive oil
  • 1tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1tbsp smoked paprika
  • 2tsp ground cumin
  • 2tsp chili powder
  • 1tsp ground coriander
  • 1tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper

Procedure

  • In a small bowl, combine all your spices. Rub them evenly over the beef while pressing it on the surface.
  • In a large pan, heat your oil over medium-high heat, add the meat and keep changing it on all sides until browned, then transfer on a slow cooker or oven.
  • Add sliced onions and garlic over the beef, then in a bowl you can be mixing your coffee, broth, vinegar, tomato paste and brown sugar then after pour them over the beef.
  • You can now cook until tender. In case you are to use a pressure cooker, use 60-70 minutes on high pressure, if using the oven cover and bake at 300 of(150°C) for 3 -4 hours. If using a slow cooker, cook on low for 8-10 hours or high for 3-6 hours.
  • After, remove the beef, shred with two forks, then return it to the sauce to sock.
  • Simmer uncovered for 10 minutes to thicken if desired.
  • You can then serve with a food of choice.
